A carbon account is a full, documented measurement of your company's greenhouse gas emissions across all three scopes — prepared in line with the GHG Protocol standard, with methodology notes and data sources. A calculator gives you a rough estimate. A carbon account is what you need when clients ask for documentation, lenders require sustainability reporting, or you are preparing for CSRD compliance.

Scope 1 covers direct emissions from your own operations — fuel combustion in company vehicles, heating of premises, on-site industrial processes. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased energy, primarily electricity and district heating. Scope 3 covers all other indirect emissions in your value chain — business travel, purchased goods and services, employee commuting, waste, and the use and end-of-life of your products. Scope 3 is typically the largest category and the hardest to measure.

Yes. CSRD requires climate disclosures under the ESRS E1 standard, which includes Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions data. If you fall under CSRD, a carbon account is not optional — it is a required input for your sustainability report. Starting the carbon account now means you have baseline data and a methodology in place before reporting obligations kick in.
